Kate Singletary is a 2019 graduate from Davidson College. In the summer of 2019, she will be traveling with a group of college-aged students on a 49-day, 4000+ mile run from San Francisco to Boston, raising money and awareness for the Ulman Foundation. If you would like to follow along throughout her journey, she will be keeping a blog throughout her summer experience: https://kasingletary.wixsite.com/4kblog.
What is your connection to the cancer community?
My dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma this past summer and received a stem cell transplant in November. I have always wanted to do something meaningful to raise awareness for different types of cancer and to gain support and resources for cancer research; now that my dad is a member of the community of people living with cancer, my drive to raise awareness and support for those affected by cancer has exponentially increased. Multiple members of my extended family and school community have also gone through cancer diagnoses and treatments, and I feel as though every day I am learning about another person's diagnosis. I aspire to be an integral part of the movement to support cancer research and to be a cohesive part of the community that serves and supports those affected by cancer.
Why are you traveling 4,000 miles this summer with the Ulman Foundation?
I chose to become a runner with the 4K for Cancer because of my desire to provide meaningful support for anyone affected by cancer, along with my passion for running and my mentality of doing whatever it takes to make an impact in another person's life, even if it is just one person. I played Division I field hockey at Davidson College, so I have experience pushing through physical challenges. In being a part of a team, I have also had the incredible experience of representing something that is much bigger than myself, which I have an even greater opportunity to do with the 4K for Cancer. I am running to support my dad, my family members, and anyone around the country we can touch on our way across the country. One of my greatest aspirations in life is to be a servant to others; by traveling 4,000 miles this summer with the Ulman Foundation, I have the opportunity to put this goal into practice through supporting those affected by cancer, showing support for my own family, and hopefully improving myself and learning from others along the way.
2019 marks the 18th year of the 4K for Cancer sending young adults on journeys across the country in an effort to inspire hope and unite communities in the fight against cancer. The 4K for Cancer is a program of the Ulman Foundation (Ulman). Interested in joining the fight? Apply to be a rider or runner a at www.4kforcancer.org!
CHALLENGE:
Over 72,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year. Young adults (ages 15-39) face a variety of unique challenges with a cancer diagnosis including fertility preservation, social isolation, lack of insurance, delayed diagnosis, and more.
SOLUTION:
Ulman Foundation changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, Ulman is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
Ulman House - This year Ulman will open a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.
Your donation will help make these programs and our mission possible!
