On September 15th, I will be embarking on a 1,500+ mile running journey from Locust Point in Baltimore to Key West Florida. I am doing this with Ulman Cancer Fund. The money we raise will help fund different programs for young adults who are fighting cancer. For example, the UCF House which will allow families a place to stay when there love one is receiving treatments. The money will also help with fund the Young Adult Schlorships, Patient Navigation Programs, chemo care bags and many other programs. I have been lucky enough to be part of one the funded porgrams Cancer to 5K which is a 12 week program where cancer surviors train to compete and finish a 5K race.
My biggest motivation to do Point to Point is in memory of my big brother Scott Sorensen. On March 25, 1991 my older brother Scott Sorensen was diagnosed with Non-Hopgkin Lymphoma Cancer he was only 6 years old. After 2 1/2 year courageos and strong battle my brother would lose his battle with cancer on October 5th, 1993 he was only 9 years. At the age of 3 my life would change forever. Running has given me a a safe place to grieve for my brother. Even though my brother was not able to beat this horrible disease does not mean that ONE day we can find a cure. Along this journey we will be stopping at local hospitals and cancer centers to meet cancer patient to let them know that they are not alone in there fight.
For 8 days I will make this incredible journey to Key West and every mile that I run I know my brother will be with me. Every person that I meet along this journey my brother will be with me. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
UCF House - a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
