This September I will be part of an amazing experience as I set out on a 1500 mile run-walk - part of a program for Ulman Cancer Foundation in the fight against cancer in young adults. My goal is to raise $4500 that will go towards the program. I have not had a direct experience with anyone I know as a young adult having cancer, however in 2002, I lost both of my grandmothers to breast and lung cancer within a 4 month span. That process left me wanting to help others but I'd say that it wasn't until my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago that I really felt like I wanted to take it a step further.
My mom had just received her mammogram results which had revealed cancerous tissue. I will never forget the feelings of sheer fear and helplessness. All I wanted to do was be there for her and spend every moment I could with her. It was in that time right after we found out up until her surgery that I felt the closest to my family and friends. It was an experience that I never want to relive but at the same time was grateful for it because of the love and perspective it provided. Fortunately, my mother's surgery was a success and her cancer has been in remission ever since.
My full time job is an operating room nurse and I have been part of my fair share of oncology surgeries. It is pretty obvious that these patients are not exactly in the highest of spirits. All the while, it is my job to be an absolute professional and treat every patient with the same amount of care. But since my experience with my mother and grandmothers, it has become more personal each time considering I know what it feels like to go through that with someone I love.
Because of all this, it has become a goal of mine to embark on this week-long journey to share this experience with survivors. I want to help spread awareness and hopefully get the chance to run/walk alongside them as well as listen to their stories and perhaps be that shoulder to cry on - really get a chance to let those affected know there are people who want to help and who are there for support in times of need.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story and please help me reach my goal of $4500!!!
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
UCF House - a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
Your donation will help make these programs and our mission possible!
