I’m a long time cancer survivor.  In 1978, when I was 16 years old and a junior in high school, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.  No matter how much time has gone by, thoughts of living with cancer never disappear.  

There’s nothing simple about dealing with cancer.  It can be hard to talk about it, but it’s worse if you keep it inside.

When I listen to stories of what other people have gone through, and are going through, it helps me break down the lonely feeling cancer creates.  And when someone tells me that hearing my story has helped them in some way, well, it softens the horror of my memories and fears.

Since becoming involved in Cancer to 5K, and Key to Keys 2015, a community of support has grown around me.  Strangers became friends, and those new friends became family.  

The nightmare of cancer has brought something beautiful into my life:  the connection I have with so many loving and courageous people.

In June of 2016 I was diagnosed with bladder cancer.  I was lucky, because along with friends, family, and loved ones, the friends and family I made through UCF were, and continue to be, a huge part of my support system.  There’s no way I can repay that, but I can pass it on.  

Being a part of this 2018 Key to Keys Team, bringing awareness to the cancer fight, raising money to help the UCF provide folks with programs and services, and doing whatever I can to help others, is the least I can do.

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
 

Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.

UCF House - a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore. 

Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.

Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
