In the summer of 2018, Shayna Buffalow will be traveling with a group of college-aged students on a 70-day, 4000+ mile ride from Baltimore, MD to Portland, OR, raising money and awareness for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
What is your connection to the cancer community?
My grandma passed away from lung cancer in 2000. At the time I was young and didn't really understand much of what was going on, all I knew was that I lost someone very special to me. Since doing the 4k run last year I have learned that a lot more people in my family have had or have cancer. Most of them thankfully being survivors. My Aunt however lost her Mom to cancer and when I dedicated a run to her during my summer she was so thankful and hearing about her mom made me feel so much closer to my Aunt and the cancer community as a whole. Seeing how cancer effects people is heartbreaking especially your loved ones. But also hearing success stories is so inspiring! I hope one day no one will have to experience cancer.
Why are you traveling over 4000 miles this summer with the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults?
I ran on Team Baltimore in 2016 and the experience I had was unforgettable. The Ulman Cancer Fund is such a wonderful organization and to be apart of something so incredible is an honor. I wanted to challenge myself a little bit more and be apart of one of the 4k for Cancer ride teams. It'll be a challenge because one, I'll be riding across the country which is hard enough, two I'm not the most experienced rider, three I'll be away from my family and friends for 70 days, and interacting with people that have been effected by cancer is hard. It's incredible hearing every ones stories but it can also be very emotional! One of my favorite things about the 4k for Cancer is meeting all the strangers along the way. Whether it's on the side of the road, at your host, in a restaurant, or in a hospital, you meet so many incredible people who have stories about cancer and are truly inspired by the 4k and Ulman Cancer Fund. My experience was one I'll never have again but I'm ready to be apart of a new experience that will be just as unforgettable. Cancer changes lives, so do we.
2018 marks the 17th year of the 4K for Cancer sending young adults on journeys across the country in an effort to inspire hope and unite communities in the fight against cancer. CHALLENGE:
Over 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year. Young adults (ages 15-39) face a variety of unique challenges with a cancer diagnosis including fertility preservation, social isolation, lack of insurance, delayed diagnosis, and more.
SOLUTION:
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
UCF House - This year UCF broke ground on a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.
