Caitlin recently completed her Master of Science degree at East Stroudsburg University. In the summer of 2018, she will be traveling with a group of college-aged students on a 49-day, 4000+ mile run from San Francisco to Baltimore, raising money and awareness for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
What is your connection to the cancer community?
I have a very strong connection to the cancer community. It has affected many people that I love and cancer has left a huge impact on my life. About nine years ago, my father was diagnosed with cancer and my life was changed in every way imaginable. My grandfather and grandmother both lost their battle's to cancer as I was growing up. I have watched my loved ones fight against cancer and I believe that no one should have to fight the battle alone. I am a recent graduate student from East Stroudsburg University with a Master's in Clinical Exercise Physiology. My goal is to continue my education and earn a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and work cancer patients. I want to work with this population of patients because it has a special place in my heart. In addition, I am currently earning my Yoga Teaching Training Certification and my goal is to offer yoga classes for cancer patients and survivors. I have an extremely strong connection to the cancer community and I want to continue to give back in as many ways as possible.
Why are you traveling 4,000 miles this summer with the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults?
I am running across America with the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults because I want to help support the cancer community by doing what I love which is running. My father was a runner and I have followed in his footsteps. I fell in love with running at the age of 10 when my parents took me to my first track practice. I want to run in honor of my Father, Grandfather, and Grandmother. Cancer has left a major impact on my life because I have to watch my loves struggle through their battles. I want to use my athletic capabilities to help fight back against cancer. I will help support the goals and mission of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults by running across America as part of the 2018 Cross-Country Team.
2018 marks the 17th year of the 4K for Cancer sending young adults on journeys across the country in an effort to inspire hope and unite communities in the fight against cancer. CHALLENGE:
Over 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year. Young adults (ages 15-39) face a variety of unique challenges with a cancer diagnosis including fertility preservation, social isolation, lack of insurance, delayed diagnosis, and more.
SOLUTION:
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
UCF House - This year UCF broke ground on a “home away from home” to provide free housing for young adult cancer patients, and their caregivers, in East Baltimore.
