On April 22nd, 2017 I'm going to be riding with the Ulman Cancer Fund's Key 2 Keys bike team from the Key Highway in Baltimore, Marlyand to Key West, Florida. I'm riding to raise awareness for the 70,000 young adults diagnosed with cancer every year and to raise money for Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
When my friend, Mike Tirone, first tried to recruit me to ride 1,500 miles and raise $4,500 for charity I said no. I've never raised that much money before, and I had my own life going on to worry about training for a crazy bike ride. But as he invited me on his training rides, we'd randomly run into other people involved with UCF, Team Fight and several other programs within the UCF community and I could sense the love and comraderie that this family has for each other.
Mike, who was diagnosed with cancer as a teenager, is one of the most loving, supportive, and inspiring people I know. From doing fundraising in the past for UCF and meeting people who are a part of this community, I know that he's indictivive of the organization as a whole.
Why am I Doing This?
I'm super pumped about this ride. Long distance cycling is something I'm really passionate about. Using this ride as a way to raise awareness and funds for this deserving cause is a powerful way for me to help people through one of my passions, and it gives the ride that much more purpose and meaning.
Young adults are an underserved demographic when it comes to support, awareness, and research, yet 70,000 people between the ages of 15 and 39 are diagnosed every year.
What is the Ulman Cancer Fund?
The money I raise for the UCF on behalf of the Key 2 Keys ride goes to fund their main mission of supporting young adults and their love ones as they go through their fight with cancer. They provide scholarships, household support, guidance, counseling, housing, awareness and a guidebook.
The UCF is more than just a charity. They provide social support to young adults, as fighting cancer can be isolating at this age. UCF is a family that can fill in. It's a tight-knit, loving community full of inpiring people, many of whom are cancer surviors. Everywhere I go with anyone involved in the Ulman Cancer Fund family, we run into other people who are part of the community. Keep an eye out; you'll see them.
The Ulman Cancer Fund also makes fitness a big part of their mission. Fitness programs like Cancer To 5k empowers young adults at a time when it can feel like they're losing control of their bodies.
The UCF provides the support, love and is able to empower young adults in their fight with cancer along with their families and friends. This organization is able to make what would be the worst thing to happen to a young adult, into one of the most meaningful times of their lives. I'm riding with Key 2 Keys to raise awareness for UCF so people that need help in during their fight, can find it with UCF. The bigger accomplishment for me isn't riding 1,500 miles to Florida, it is raising funds for this amazing cause, because I need your help to do it.
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide free support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
Cancer to 5K - a 12-week training program designed to introduce or reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support & resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer expereience and long-term cancer survival.
Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
