As I begin my training and preparation for my first Ironman Triathlon, Ironman Maryland on Saturday, October 3, 2015, I have partnered The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and their "Team Fight" to raise funds in honor of Jamie Roberts, a 2011 graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland. As the Athletic & Recreation Center Director and Cross Country Coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland, I got to know Jamie and witness the impact she had on the campus while a student here. I will hope to continue her efforts in raising money for The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults
Jamie passed on Friday, June 13, 2014, as she was in the midst of a 4,000-mile bike ride from Baltimore to Portland, Oregon in support of The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults 4K for Cancer program, offering hope, inspiration, and support to cancer communities. A beloved member of the St. Mary’s community, Roberts was a three-sport athlete who starred for the Seahawks on the soccer (2009-10) and lacrosse (2009-11) fields as well as on the hardwood (2007-11). She was an all-conference player in both basketball and lacrosse. As a senior, she picked up both the SMCM Female Athlete of the Year and the Athletic Director’s Awards.
I have been competing in triathlons for the past 9 years and this is my first venture into the fill Ironman distance. In the past, I have completed three 70.3 Half Ironman races and numerous Sprint and Olympic races. I am looking forward to challenge that this training will provide and I want to thank you in advance for supporting my efforts to raise money for The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults and their loved ones as they fight cancer and embrace survivorship. With your support, the Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide multiple support services and resources for the young adult cancer community including:
- Cancer to 5K - a free, progressive, 12-week run/walk program designed to reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.
- Helping Others Fight - a volunteer program that provides basic services such as transportation to and from treatment, yard work, home repairs and delivery of chemo care bags to local cancer patients and their families so they can focus their energy on their battle with cancer and their well-being.
- Patient Navigation - a free program (onsite at cancer centers and remotely through our office) that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone. We provide one-on-one support and resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.
- Scholarships - a financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.
