HEARTS FOR HARRIET

MILES FOR MAGGIE

Friends, Family and Colleagues,

Hard to believe that this is now the seventh year since I committed to doing the Columbia Iron Girl annually in honor of two remarkable women.  And the seventh year for raising funds for cancer research, treatment and support services.

The two women are my first cousin Harriet who in 2007 lost her 9 year fight for her life to breast cancer.  And Maggie Brown, a dear friend and community icon, who fought hard but succumbed to brain cancer in early 2010.

The cause that I raise funds for is Team Fight and the Ulman Cancer Fund. What an appropriate name - Team Fight!  Harriet and Maggie fought long and hard in their struggle against cancer.  And the time and effort put into training, racing and raising funds for cancer is my "fight" in honor of these two women and in support of others who are still in their own fight for their lives.

This year Brad and I moved to downtown Frederick and the Columbia Iron Girl event has been in question.  So I am committing to run at least as many miles as the Iron Girl's total race was - approximately 25 - in events throughout 2014.  And the first one is this coming weekend - the Frederick Half Marathon. I still may do the Columbia Iron Girl assuming it does go forward this year.  In any case, as I always do - there will be only one ask for all my efforts.

Many thanks to all of you who so generously support me in my annual commitment!

Barb

ABOUT Away TEAM - TEAM FIGHT 2014

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, as they fight cancer and embrace survivorship.

With your support, The Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide multiple support services and resources for the young adult cancer community, including:

  • Cancer to 5K - A free, progressive, 12-week run/walk program designed to reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.

  • Helping Others Fight - A volunteer program that provides basic services – such as transportation to and from treatment, yard work, home repairs, delivery of chemo care bags – to local cancer patients and their families so they can focus their energy on their battle with cancer and their well-being.

  • Patient Navigation - A free program - onsite at cancer centers and remote - that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone.  We provide one-on-one personal support and resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.

  • Scholarships - A financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.

Thank you for making these programs and our mission possible.
