It's almost time to run the Maryland Half Marathon!!!!!

For those of you who don't know my story,  I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in September of 2011 when I was 35. After undergoing a colon resection and 8 months (12 rounds of chemo) I considered myself cancer free. At least I thought I was until some routine blood work in the summer of 2013 revealed some unusual numbers. A CAT scan shortly thereafter revealed that indeed the cancer had come back and it had metastisized. I was now looking at another 12 rounds of chemo to fight what was now stage 4 colon cancer - a cancer that can never be cured - just kept at bay.

When I underwent chemo the first time I felt as though I had put my life on hold and that I would resume living once I was finished. With the knowledge that I would be going  through it all again I decided to approach treatment in a vastly different way and simply keep living. I didn't want to focus on the cancer and the chemo but rather on all the many wonderful things that I had in my life - family, friends, and oddly enough, my health. Before I was redisgnosed I started running with the Cancer to 5K program through the Ulman Cancer Fund and discovered that I loved to run. While going through chemotherapy I continued to run and proudly ran 6.5 miles on an Olypmic relay team as part of the Half Full Triathlon in October 2013 - just 5 days after a grueling round of chemo.

When treatment ended in February 2014 I made running the MD Half Marathon on May 10, 2014 my goal.

Another goal was to run as a TEAM FIGHT member. It is an honor to run my first Half Marathon not only for myself but for the amazing organization that helped me realize my love of running.

Please help me to reach my fundraising goal and support the Ulman Cancer Fund!!

Thank you!

Love,

Charlotte

ABOUT Away TEAM - TEAM FIGHT 2014

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, as they fight cancer and embrace survivorship.

With your support, The Ulman Cancer Fund is able to provide multiple support services and resources for the young adult cancer community, including:

  • Cancer to 5K - A free, progressive, 12-week run/walk program designed to reintroduce cancer survivors to physical activity.

  • Helping Others Fight - A volunteer program that provides basic services – such as transportation to and from treatment, yard work, home repairs, delivery of chemo care bags – to local cancer patients and their families so they can focus their energy on their battle with cancer and their well-being.

  • Patient Navigation - A free program - onsite at cancer centers and remote - that ensures no young adult ever faces cancer alone.  We provide one-on-one personal support and resources to young adults and their families to help them manage the cancer experience and long-term cancer survival.

  • Scholarships - A financial assistance program to help young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one.

Thank you for making these programs and our mission possible.

Laura Grau 05/08/2014 $25.00 My beautiful Charlotte, I must say I am extremely honored to be your sherpa this weekend. In the past year, you have demonstrated extreme strength, courage, love. This may sound really weird... I hate cancer, but if there is one good thing about it is that it brought you into my life. I feel like I learn so much from you every single day. In each of our runs, I feel like we are just a force of nature speeding through the streets of Baltimore. This half marathon is not going to be easy, I know that, but I also know that you are a warrior and we will get to that finish line smiling. I love you, so much. Thank you for being my best friend, my sister, my running partner. <3
